Troubleshooting
I hate it when the internet does not work. Two days in a row. Not happy at all. I ain't paying $49.95 a month for broadband access to get shitty connection.
Like what all professional engineers SHOULD do, I calmly clicked through everything I can think of that can warrant such a disaster. YES it's a disaster!! I plugged the ethernet cable to my housemate's mac and it worked. Great. Looks like it's my laptop that's playing up.
And then I thought crap! I must have deleted some files related to the web browser or the internet. I opened up the Recycle Bin in a frantic search for those files....and I don't even know what I'm looking for. Oh bother, I'll just recover EVERYTHING. Still to no avail.
And then I decided to plug in the USB cable instead. Connection was detected. Somehow the ethernet cable isn't working...anybody got any ideas why? how? Johann?
I'm back to square one.
A full load of unnecessary files recovered back to its original location.
Windows popping up all the time, whining 'You have low disk space'.
And I have one hour of deprived sleep.
Thank God it's Friday tomorrow.

well, i'm not sure if it's a cabling problem or that winsock.h got corrupted. mebbe u should try checking your IP address to make sure.

Looks like I'd better respond since I've been nominated by name...
1. Check that the "link" light on your laptop is lit when plugged in - if it isn't, you've got cabling or hardware issues
2. Ensure your TCP/IP settings are set to obtain IP and DNS automatically (unless your ISP gives you a static IP address - I take it you're with TPG? I also assume that you don't need to run adsl "dial-up" software on your pc)
3. Start > Run... > cmd, then try ping www.tpg.com.au (or whatever your ISP is). This will isolate whether you just have browser problems, or if your whole connection is stuffed. If this works, then try ping www.yahoo.com just to ensure you can reach worldwide sites.
4. Download and run antispyware and antivirus if you haven't already. Recommended free software: Lavasoft Ad-aware, Spybot S&D, AVG antivirus. Spyware/viruses can play havoc with your connection.
That's all I can think of for now. How come never ask the B? :-P
